For the first time since its inception in 2014, a HEEN Workshop was organised outside Berlin. The 8th workshop on 22-25 November 2017 in Brussels focused on the topic of the so-called EU package “Clean Energy for All Europeans”. It took place mainly in the Brussels premises of Becker Büttner Held with excursions to nearby institutions. We started with a well-balanced mixture of keynotes speeches, expert presentations and debate around the ‘CleanEnergy4All’ package with speakers Kavita Ahluwalia of Uniper, Christian Egenhofer of think tank CEPS, Clément Serre of the European Commission and Marco Foresti from ENTSO-E. HEEN members Andrei Ilaş and Björn Verse made contributions to the workshop besides many smaller pitches from other participants. Georg Zachmann from BRUEGEL and Robin Cohen added further insights into EU energy policy. Highlight of the day was our visit a the European Political Strategy Centre where HEEN member Philipp Offenberg explained us ‘Junckerisation’ of European policy and future policies of the European Commission. Days 2+3 were shaped by further focus sessions. We invited expert speeches of Dörte Fouquet of Becker Büttner Held, Adam White of WWF, Anna-Lena Fockenbrock of Evonik and HEEN member Markus Leick from Auswärtiges Amt. Our excursion to the Greens/EFA in the European Parliament featured an interactive session on an upcoming ITRE committee vote on energy efficiency. We closed the HEEN VIII workshop at an AirBnB house in central Brussels with the traditional Network Development Session to discuss the future evolution of HEEN.
